Thursday, February 25 2016, 4pm UGA Chapel, North campus Sven Beckert, Laird Bell Professor of History at Harvard University, researches and teaches the history of the U.S. in the 19th century, with a particular emphasis on the history of capitalism, including its economic, social, political and transnational dimensions. His recent book, Empire of Cotton: A Global History, was winner of the Bancroft Prize and selected as a Pulitzer Prize Finalist. Beckert’s talk is part of the Willson Center’s Global Georgia Initiative, which brings world class thinkers to Georgia. Beckert's talk is presented in partnership with the School of Public and International Affairs, the University of Georgia Press, the Department of History and the Graduate School.
