Lyndon House Arts Center Brown Bag Lunch: Confederate Monuments: Context & Controversy

Lyndon House Arts Center Community Room, 211 Hoyt Street Athens, GA

from the Lyndon House:

Dr. Akela Reason "will discuss the history and construction of Confederate monuments and memorials during the next Brown Bag Luncheon hosted by the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation.

In the wake of national conversations around what to do with these monuments to the Confederacy, and following protests in Charlottesville, Virginia, and other cities, Akela Reason, an associate professor in the history department who teaches courses in U.S. material culture and American intellectual, cultural, and urban history, will provide historical context and substance for an informal and open dialogue among ACHF members and the community-at-large. A Q & A will follow her presentation.

The bi-monthly event will take place from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, at the Lyndon House Arts Center Community Room. The event is free and open to the public. Participants are encouraged to bring their lunch.

"We first started thinking about the issue of Confederate monuments and whether ACHF should take a stand several months ago,” said ACHF Executive Director Amy Kissane. “Then of course Charlottesville happened and we realized that, yes, as the local historic preservation advocate we have a responsibility to shed light on the question of what these monuments mean, yesterday and today, and to help the community have a conversation about what the right thing to do is.""
