Thursday, February 22 2018, 7pm Phi Kappa Hall, North Campus In light of Black History Month, the Phi Kappa Literary Society would like to invite all students, faculty, and staff to join us to debate the resolution: 'BIHR: The relocation of the Confederate Monument on Broad Street is beneficial to the Athens Clarke County community.' The Phi Kappa Literary Society is the second oldest Greek-lettered collegiate society in North America as well as part of the oldest collegiate rivalry in the United States. We have just celebrated our 198th anniversary of excellence in debate and oratory, and we continue to uphold the traditions of the society and of the University every single day. Phi Kappa Hall is located on North Campus just across from the Hunter Holmes Building and is ready to welcome you into its upper chamber to hold a difficult conversation. Guests are encouraged but not required to speak on resolutions and ask questions. Dr. Akela Reason will be giving a talk about the history and value of monuments and memorials, specifically within the context of this debate. Debates typically run for 45 minutes to an hour and a half, but guests are free to come and go as they please.
