Georgia Open History Library Launch: The Power of Digital Libraries and the Contest over Historical Narrative

Catherine Kerrison
Virtual event

Digital libraries of primary sources enrich the understanding of the sheer diversity of the American experience. In anticipation of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, historian Catherine Kerrison will address the broad historical and intellectual significance of curated open digital resources, which allow both scholars and an informed public to challenge the narratives of those who would erase the complexity of our early national history.

This talk is in celebration of the launch of the Georgia Open History Library open digital resource and accompanying exhibit at the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Funded by the NEH Humanities Open Book Program, the Georgia Open History Library is a project of the UGA Press in partnership with the UGA Libraries, Willson Center for Humanities and Arts, Atlanta History Center, Georgia Historical Society, and Georgia Humanities. Kerrison’s talk is co-sponsored by the Willson Center for Humanities and Arts and the UGA History Department. Free and open to the public. Registration is required.

The exhibit at the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library is on view from September 2021 through December 2021 and showcases a selection of original manuscripts and rare books held by the Hargrett Library documented in these newly digitized volumes. Touch screens in the gallery provide access to digitized versions of these resources hosted in the Digital Library of Georgia.
