Lee of UC Santa Barbara will discuss his new book, The First Black Archaeologist: A Life of John Wesley Gilbert (Oxford University Press 2022), with a particular focus on Gilbert’s community, educational, and scholarly connections in Georgia.

John Wesley Gilbert, today recognized as the first professionally trained archaeologist of African American descent, was born near Hephzibah, Georgia, received his early education in Augusta and Atlanta, and spent nearly his entire career at Paine College in Augusta.
