Terrell James Orr Receives 2022 John Higham Research Fellowship from the Organization of American Historians

BLOOMINGTON, IN—The Organization of American Historians (OAH) today announced that Terrell James Orr, University of Georgia, is recipient of an OAH 2022 John Higham Research Fellowship, which is given annually to graduate students writing doctoral dissertations for a Ph.D. in American history. The Fellowship was announced during the OAH’s 2022 Conference on American History.

Orr’s work, “The Roots of Global Citrus in ‘Nuevo South’ Florida and Rural São Paulo,” tells the history of globalization from the overlooked perspective of agricultural labor.

Focusing on the citrus industries in the United States and Brazil, the project explains how workers experienced and contested the changing dynamics of migration and capital flows during the late twentieth century. The committee believes this timely project provides a compelling framework for interrogating the dynamics of today’s globalized world. The Higham Fellowship will support Terrell James Orr’s research into Brazilian labor and agrarian movements at the University of Texas at Austin.
