Graduate Alumnus Dillon Carroll's dissertation is on emotionally and psychologically damaged veterans of the American Civil War. His dissertation is a hybrid, combining social and cultural history, as well as military history, medicine, psychology and gender. He is interested in how soldiers, nurses, doctors, army brass and civilians thought about and interpreted mental illness during the war. He is also interested in the experience of veterans when they came home after the war, especially veterans who ended up inmates in the nation's many insane asylums after the war. He is currently living in California and writing and teaching at Yuba College..
