Graduate Alumnus Research Research Areas: Race and Slavery African American Native American Research Interests: Savannah Guenthner researches race in North America, especially throughout the 19th century. Common practices that manifest within almost every culture such as dance, death, and other phenomena draw her research towards a more interdisciplinary approach which includes material culture, museum studies, and art history. Through this lens, she considers the social interactions and imbalances which surround these practices, and how they might affect perceptions and politics today. Currently, Savannah investigates the visualized construction of racial identities and systems within early portraiture taken by Native American photographers of their own communities. This work focuses on the late 19th century to the early 20th century period in North America. Informed by photographic techniques and visual culture, she hopes to begin discerning personal from imposed identity.
